Doom does work for me, after I followed the instructions uploaded to
Epas by Sam. I set my ULTRASND variable to 220,1,1,5,7, copied DMXGUS.INI
(found on Epas) to my /doom directory, and made sure that ULTRADIR was
set to my /ultrasnd directory. The GF1 IRQ has to be 7 or less. I
suggest using 5 since 7 is a bit problematic on many machines (or so
it seems). (I'm using 7 for my MIDI/SB IRQ just to keep it in the
7 or less range, but I don't think that it's used by DOOM.)
Doom does not use Ultramid, nor does it have 3D sound. It uses an
internal GUS driver that appears to have cannabalized a lot of the
code from Ultramid, and the sound effects are only panned left or
right. The sounds also appear to be mixed in software instead of
being loaded into GUS RAM and triggered from there.
The music is rather boring, by no fault of the GUS, but rather the
composer. A lot of really obnoxious metal guitars in the first level.
Hopefully, it will get better in the other levels.
BTW, if the game crashes, try turning off the joystick or mouse support
in the game's setup.

DMA 11? DMA channels go only up to 7. 1 and 3 are the normally
available 8-bit ones, while 5 and 7 are the normally available 16-bit
ones.
You're probably thinking of the IRQ settings. In the ULTRASND variable,
the numbers correspond to port address, DMA channel, DMA channel,
GF1 IRQ, and SB/MIDI IRQ, in that order. The two DMA channels are for
DRAM access and recording, but they are usually the same.
I don't know much about installing SCSI cards, but IRQ 11 is usually
taken by them, so avoid setting either of the GUS' IRQs to 11.

Running Ultrajoy may cause this SB IRQ timeout problem. Try deleting
Ultrajoy from your autoexec.bat, and don't run it. Of course, this
might mean not being able to use the game port on the GUS until Gravis
comes out with a bug fix for this.

No. As far as I know, the codec on the Max and 16-bit DB is not at
all programmable.

Hi everybody!
It's really a nice game, BUT I can't make its music sound thru my GUS.
I had problems, also, with SFX which I solved changing my ULTRASND env. strng.
from 220,7,7,11,7 to 220,1,1,11,7. Does anyone have experienced such troubles?
For information, I have a 1MB rev 2.2 GUS, a 386DX40 with a speedstar 24X and
adding or removing expanded memory managers doesn't seem to make any difference.
HELP! Please. I can't stand hearing from my Sound Blaster friends that
their board works while the GUS doesn't anymore!!!!

You can now get music and sounds, as I'm sure you've heard. The music is
middling, about what you'd expect from a game. At any rate, I turned the
music off very quickly (something's just not kosher with music playing in
your headset as you go into a deserted, dark, base).
For all the guitar
players out there (like myself, but no way to record), can we _please_
get a decent guitar patch? All the guitars sound like what a keyboardist
thinks the guitar sounds like. Yuck. "Distortion" guitar. Whatever.
Anyway, there will probably be like fourty messages about this sound
working....

And wow, oh wow, is it cool. The music itself isn't that great, but
nothings wrong with the quality, and it adds atmosphere. The sounds - I
wish I had headphones with me. The fireballs sound like they're going
offside as well as actually doing it, and so on. The patch that was
posted here from ID worked fine. The only thing I had to do was change
the GUS's IRQ. FYI - the settings I have that work are
Address = 220
DMA = 1/1
GUS IRQ = 5
SB/MIDI IRQ = 5
Happy gaming!

Subject: DOOM FULL SOLUTION
This has been posted elsewhere in various pieces, but I thought I'd just
summarize exactly what to do:
1. Download DMXGUS.INI from epas, uudecode it from yesterday's message,
or just copy ULTRAMID.INI to your DOOM dir and rename it DMXGUS.INI
2. Set your ULTRASND variable's IRQs (the last two numbers) to 7 or less.
example: set ULTRASND=200,1,1,7,5
3. Do NOT run ultramid. It won't hurt, but DOOM includes a version of it,
apparently. It is not necessary.
After this, all will work properly. No setup, no fuss, just GREAT music
and sound. Check out the flawless panning in stereo when a fireball
passes by and slamms into the wall. Beautiful!
If this isn't clear, feel free to email me. I'm happy as a clam, and I
can tell you it sounds a buttload better than the sound bastard at work.
Best,
Don

I just tried it with UltraMid AND the GUS fix. It works much better.
Sometimes the sound FX drop out, and will kick in later on for some
reason, but over all it sounds a lot better than without UltraMid. I
ran it with ULTRAMID -M110
386DX-33, 4Megs, QEMM 7.02, 4DOS. Everything else is just fluff.

Subject: DOOM v1.0 Sound + Music with GUS!
To get DOOM v1.0 to run properly with both music and digitized sound effects
with the Gravis Ultrasound: 2 steps.
1) Set your ULTRASND environment variable, and use GF1 IRQ less than 9
example: SET ULTRASND=220,1,1,7,5
|_______ GF1 IRQ
Make sure your ULTRADIR environment variable is still set.
example: SET ULTRADIR=C:\ULTRASND
2) Copy ULTRAMID.INI into your DOOM directory and rename it to DMXGUS.INI
(or find and use the DMXGUS.INI file already on epas)
Run the setup program and select the Ultrasound for both sfx and music.
Now run DOOM!

Subject: DOOM works fine. Here's how.
I'm sure there will be plenty of DOOM messages today, but here's my
story. I have DOOM on my Gateway 486/66V with 8MB of RAM. I am
running HIMEM and EMM386, DOS 6.0 and DoubleSpace. I copied the DMXGUS.INI
file from yesterday's digest into the DOOM directory. I did NOT have to
load Ultramid. I get both the digital effects AND the music. It sounds
greate. I also have a SB16 in my machine. My ultrasound is set to
SET ULTRASND=240,1,1,7,5
when I run DOOM. A friend has only 4MB of RAM and is having trouble
getting the music to run (but he gets an out of memory error). His
digital sound works fine, thought. I know that
DOOM will not work with IRQ's >= 9. In fact, in the soundblaster setup,
reports a message to you when you set up your IRQ that it must be less than
9.
I hope this helps some of you out!

The FD controller probably has a BIOS base address of 0xc8000 and uses
an IRQ of 5, if that is any help.

No, it will not work at all, except through Windoze, and I'm a tad
bitter. =(. Sierra switched to a new 32 bit _protected_ mode game
engine, and chose not to include any GUS coding. Don't ask me why, not
as if it would have taken more than, say, a couple o' hours. =) Anyway, I
sent it back, and will not purchase any more Sierra games until they
support the GUS. The tech guy I called said that no patch was in the
works, but I have heard rumors (very faint ones, actually) that they are
working on one. At any rate, don't buy the game until they do support it.
Oh yeah, the game itself is really cool - murder, forbidden love, shady
deals, witches, voodoo. My friend who bought it loves it. Then again,
he's got a crappy SB normal. Humph.

P.S. That was supposed to be a light tone, but it's late, and I'm having
trouble getting my humor (hard to find on a good day) across. I really
meant that last sentence about not buying it, though.

Subject: Got DOOM working!
After much effort, and thanks to suggestions posted here, I finally got
DOOM working, and boy does it kick butt! I love it!
DOOM retched if my GUS IRQ was set to 11... I changed my setup from
220,7,7,11,5 to 220,7,7,5,7, and got digital sound effects! Also, the file
DMXGUS.INI was missing, and the uuencoded file provided here by a kind soul did
just the trick to get the cool music (rock'n'roll!).
All the same, the DOOM setup is kind of temperamental... running DOOM
works on and off (usually does work, except sometimes if you exit the game and
try to restart it). It seems to leave some of its code resident in memory
(either the setup or DOOM itself), which prevents you from running it again.
Nevertheless, a great game, with great sound!

So has anyone got this combination to work? I'm looking at SCSI cards,
but wouldn't want one that didn't work with the GUS.

Yes -- but is MegaEm native support? No. It emulates a Roland, with
SoundBlaster. If the card sounds that good with emulation, why bother
programming specific code for it when you can still use it, while
catering to the very large SB market.

True. Very true. What does this mean? No native support. If you go
through a driver, you will most likely not take advantage of every
aspects of the GUS -- a driver platform has to take into acount the
broad spectrum, not just one card.
Me, as long as it sounds good, I don't care if it's native, emulation,
whatever. In fact, I'm quite happy my card can emulate so many things.

No crash. I haven't tried with ultramid -- I will later. The game

Subject: HELP - GUS and SB-type in same PC???
Hi all,
I decided that since I have a slow system and couldn't get
my GUS to work well with Rebel Assault (it's not the GUS,
it's my puny 25mhz machine), I'd buy a SoundBleeper type
board to use for some things and use the GUS where it's
supported, for MIDI work, etc. So I got a Thunderboard.
Anyway, I put both cards in and I'm having a hell of a time
getting them to coexist. I ftp'd sbgusfaq.zip from epas,
but it didn't really help.
Here's the deal. I have a riser card for cards in my PC
(Packard Bell, unfortunately). There are three slots. It
seems to me that there is some hierarchy in the positions
of the card slots. If I put the GUS in the top slot and
the Thunderboard in either the 2nd or 3rd slots, the GUS
works fine, but I can't get games to work with the TB.
The tbtest program that tests the TB finds it and works,
but games will not use it. It doesn't matter if I remove
all the GUS settings from my AUTOEXEC and CONFIG - the TB
still won't work with any games. They are on different
addresses, so that's not it. I've put them as far apart
as one at 210 and the other at 260. I've tried every
interrupt on the TB (with no settings for the GUS) and it
still won't work.
If I put the TB in the top slot and the GUS in 2 or 3, the
GUS has problems. SBOS and AUDIO will not load at all. I
get a load error. Yes, the addresses, IRQs, even DMAs are
different. If I go into Windwoes, it gives me an error message
and will not play WAVs. In either DOS or Windoze, I can play
MIDI files, but it takes forever to load the patches into
the GUS. It'll get to, say, 60% in PLAYMIDI and hang for
about ten seconds, then 66% and hang, 72% and hang, etc.
The MID file seems to play normally, but loading is for
shit.
I'd really hoped to get these two to be able to be in my PC
at the same time so I can have the best of both worlds. But
it's just not working, and I can't just leave my PC cover off
and swap cards every time I want to change games! Maybe I could
rig up and external card slot that I could alternate these
two sound cards in, but that's such a hassle - this should
work, according to others on the net.
Can anyone out there give me any advice? Help? Please? I'd
really appreciate it.
Just wait til I try to put my CD-ROM card back in (ugh!)...

There is a massive comp.sys.ibm.pc.soundcard newsgroup which contains a lot
of traffic about GUS. There is also a bogus comp.sys.ibm.pc.soundcard.GUS
newsgroup which a few sites have, which doesn't have much traffic. There
is also comp.sys.ibm.pc.soundcard.gus - I don't know whether it is bogus
also.
There was some discussion in news.groups about splitting
comp.sys.ibm.pc.soundcard, but I don't know if anything came of it.

Does anyone know the SBOS switches that need to be used with NHL Hockey?
The music is fine but the speech is in VERY VERY slo-motion. The speech is
excellent with Megaem but then, one can't have any music, since the
installation menu only lets you select one card. If you select MT-32, then
you can't get any speech at all. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Hmm...that's funny...my first ever 486 system had a UMC chipset...and I had
NO problems with the GUS and the UMC chipset whatsoever...

After grabbing that .ini file, and fixing up your irq under 11, I am sure
I am not the only one that will be raving about this superb game!
Everything works great with my settup : 486/33 VESA 1.2 VLB, GUS irq 7,
midi 11, QEMM 7.0 (? what ever the latest ver is), DOS 6.20, Adaptec SCSI 2
...
The sounds are great! I love the 3d support! The music sounds pretty
good, although I think this could be improved slightly (this does not
deteriorate the game though). Most importantly, the game runs VERY smooth
at full screen, the computer AI actually is intelegent (not like in
Wolfenstein), and its fun as hell!!
For all you tinkerers :
I found that running the game with the -devparm (eg. DOOM -DEVPARM), it
says, DEVELOPEMENT MODE ON. I assume this is like wolfies -goobers or
-debug, where you can turn on god mode, get weapons, etc. Allthough I
have not figured out how. With this mode one though, when you press F1,
it makes a screen shot and saves it as a PCX.
Everyone who has gotten this to work great, please flood ID with orders,
showing them that the GUS community is important enough that by including
support, their orders will increase drasticly!
